Wheatberry Bakery & Cafe opened its new location in August of 2007 at 321 Main
St, Amherst to lines out the door.
Wheatberry started as a bakery selling at local farmer's markets, and then began
selling to local businesses such as the Lone Wolf, Amherst Coffee, and The
Village Co-op in Leverett, MA.
Wheatberry
makes breads, pastries, sandwiches, soups, and drinks. Everything is made from
scratch with ingredients that are rigorously selected for quality, ethics of
production, and value. Ben Lester, one of the owners, says, "We are constantly
working to bring these values deeper into every aspect of our business, from
ingredients, employment, and packaging, to customer service, transportation and
waste reduction. We believe that it is not only possible but imperative to
create and run a sustainable business."
The Lesters welcomed their first child, Ella, into the world amidst construction
at the cafe. In the spring of 2008, the Lesters were awarded the SBA’s
Massachusetts Young Entrepreneur Award. Adrie Lester says, "Our vision for the
future is to continue as a vibrant neighborhood and wholesale bakery known for
delicious locally-grown food, and friendly employees, while creating and working
towards a truly sustainable model for business, culture, and humanity."
| “The counseling services we received from our
MSBDC adviser have continued to be absolutely indispensable. She has
been our biggest cheerleader, and brings a tremendous amount of
knowledge and experience to the table.” |
